This was over 350 years ago, and optical microscopy techniques for studying plants have grown and flourished in many diverse directions since. Driven by our insatiable desire for understanding the inner molecular and structural workings of plants, aided by some “clever” tricks that allow us to squeeze out hidden information, and supported by the latest technological advances, optical microscopy is almost an eternity from where it was during Hooke’s fateful first experiments. The “Modern Plant Microscopy” meeting gives center stage to a hand full of leading European researchers in the field of optical microscopy and spectroscopy, to present their latest findings and how they have helped us gain a deeper insight into the complex processes underlying the biology of plants using different cutting edge techniques. An accession panel of B. distachyon was screened under, control, drought, heat, and drought and heat conditions and the resulting imaging data was examined for traits that approximate water-use-efficiency, biomass accumulation, and tissue senescence. Bio Malia Gehan, Ph.D. is an Assistant Member and Principal Investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, who focuses understanding mechanisms of crop resilience under temperature stress. To study temperature stress and natural variation, her lab uses a number of high-throughput and high-resolution image-based phenotyping technologies. She co-developed and maintains the open-source open-development suite of image analysis tools, PlantCV. He decided to call the little building blocks he was seeing “cells”, and chronicled them along with sketches of many other natural objects in his now classic treatise on the subject – Micrographia. This was over 350 years ago, and optical microscopy techniques for studying plants have grown and flourished in many diverse directions since. The third presenter will be Hendrik Poorter from Jülich (Germany)/ moderator: Rick van de Zedde (WUR) Title: Pampered inside, pestered outside? Ways to bridge the gap between lab and field experiments Outline: Plants grown under controlled conditions (growth chamber, glasshouse) may not necessarily be phenotypically similar to those growing in the field. In this webinar I will discuss 6 issues. 1. How similar/different are plants from lab and field in a range of traits? 2. What are the environmental conditions applied in lab and field, with special emphasis on the photo-thermal ratio (daily amount of light / temperature). 3. The consequences this has for a plant's physiology. 4. What is the effect of plant density (which is much higher in the field) on individual plant performance? 5. 1st Call for Transnational Access to the European Plant Phenotyping Network 2020 Application deadline: 11th of December 2017 Application instructions, eligibility criteria, contact information: https://eppn2020.plant-phenotyping.eu/Access_Call The European Plant Phenotyping Network 2020 (EPPN2020) is an EU-funded Research Infrastructure project with the overall goal to create structural and functional synergies between the plant phenotyping institutions in Europe by linking phenotyping experts, user communities and technology development. The EPPN2020 consortium has launched a call for applications for Transnational Access to: - 31 experimental plant phenotyping facilities - at 18 different institutions across Europe. Access is granted on the basis of a simple application procedure. Selected users obtain full support to perform the proposed experiments including: - Free access for eligible user groups to research facilities - Support for travel and accommodation - On-site logistic support by the infrastructure staff - Access to knowledge and know-how at the research infrastructures necessary to complete the proposed experimental work The facilities can be used for experiments with either scientific or technological objectives. The call is open to European groups but also open (to a limited extent) to groups originating from emerging countries or international research centers. Next call will be launched in February 2018. Dear colleagues, herewith I'd like to announce the 9th (and last) call for applications for Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM) in frame of the COST action FA1306: The quest for tolerant varieties - Phenotyping at plant and cellular level. COST Short term scientific missions<http://www.cost.eu/service/glossary/STSM> (STSM) provide access to labs throughout Europe and beyond<http://www.plant-phenotyping.org/management_participants_costfa1306> for young and promising scientists (PhD students in the last year and early career investigators (ECIs), PostDocs less than 8 years after PhD) in order to get introduced and trained with respect to novel technologies of plant phenotyping (on a whole plant and molecular level, as well as integrative approaches). This COST action provides access to a network of phenotyping experts and serves as a platform to get acquainted with this interdisciplinary field by practical training in experienced labs and interdisciplinary communication.
