The 8th presenter will be Wei GUO, Ph.D (The University of Tokyo) / moderator: Rick van de Zedde (WUR) Title: Easy Plant Phenotyping by using Image processing and machine learning techniques Abstract: Developments of high-throughput plant phenotyping technologies have been dramatically accelerated by advanced image sensing and analyzing techniques. However, plant scientists still meet difficulties when they try to apply such technologies practically. For example, to train an object detection deep learning model requires manual annotations of a huge amount of images. In this webinar, Wei will introduce the lessons his team learned from various case studies and share the experience they gain. At last, Wei will also propose some of his ideas on how to expand the challenges with images for more practical data such as 3D point clouds or images acquired from field conditions, as well as how to provide easy-to-use solutions to the community. CV: Wei GUO is currently working as an Assistant professor at The University of Tokyo, Japan. He participated in the establishment of “International Field Phenomics Research Laboratory”, the first plant phenomics laboratory in Japan in 2017 as a core member. His researches focus on field-based phenotyping by using advanced sensing platforms and technologies such as drones and ground robots, image processing and machine learning approaches. Hyperspectral root imaging system available at the BOKU

On behalf of Gernot Bodner: Dear root research-, imaging and phenotyping colleagues, Finally we have established our "Hyperspectral root imaging system" at BOKU. The system allows imaging of plant roots up to more advanced development stages (about 1 meter rooting depth) in the near infrared range (900-1700 nm; 256 bands) and provides a spatial resolution of 0.1 mm. https://plantmethods.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13007-018-0352-1 The NIR imaging particularly allows comparatively high resolution water mapping in the root zone to study water uptake/depletion of single root axes; potentially the spectral features can be used to detect a range of different chemical properties of root and soil encoded in spectral features. In case of interest, don't hesitate to contact us for any possible application. We would be happy to show the system working and extend its usability for the root research/phenotyping community. 3rd Call for Transnational Access to the European Plant Phenotyping Network 2020 Application deadline: 28th of January 2019 Application instructions, eligibility criteria, contact information:https://eppn2020.plant-phenotyping.eu/Access_Call TheEuropean Plant Phenotyping Network 2020 (EPPN2020) is an EU-funded Research Infrastructure project with the overall goal to create structural and functional synergies between the plant phenotyping institutions in Europe by linking phenotyping experts, user communities and technology development. The EPPN2020 consortium has launched a call for applications for Transnational Access to: - 31 experimental plant phenotyping facilities - at 18 different institutions across Europe. Access is granted on the basis of a simple application procedure. Selected users obtain full support to perform the proposed experiments including: - Free access for eligible user groups to research facilities - Support for travel and accommodation - On-site logistic support by the infrastructure staff - Access to knowledge and know-how at the research infrastructures necessary to complete the proposed experimental work The facilities can be used for experiments with either scientific or technological objectives. The call is open to European groups but also open (to a limited extent) to groups originating from emerging countries or international research centers. Next call will be launched in spring 2019. Summary: Within this Plant Phenotyping Forum, we will discuss the role of Austria and Eastern Europe in agricultural production, as regions with huge potential and long-term traditions in the agricultural sector. Specifically, breeding and the consideration of environmental effects for continental climatic environments may require new breeding efforts in this region, including new strategies to develop new germplasm in pre-breeding programs and the application of modern breeding technologies, specifically to improve stress resistance to close the yield gap in times of a changing climate. In this context, the need to characterize the phenotype is essential to understand fundamental processes, which determine the structure and function of plants in particular. While significant progress has been made in molecular methods in recent years and the genomes of several plants have been sequenced this knowledge is not sufficient to simulate the phenotype of a plant without knowing the history and the dynamic interaction of the plant with its environment. Plant phenotyping - quantitative analysis of structure and function of plants - has become the major bottleneck and, quantitative information on genotype-environment relations is the key to address future challenges. Increasing the plant biomass production quantitatively and qualitatively can provide major contributions to grand challenges like food security on a global level, at the same time reducing a major driver for migration movements. Beyond fostering scientific progress, plant phenotyping requires a community effort.
