Dear all,
The LED panels for the GMI phytotrons will be delivered by next week and the installation will start on the 27.12.2018.
The order will be mainly given by the phytotron number (5-17). For one phytotron we count with around 3-4 hours of work.
In praxis, we will exchange one panel by another during full operation of the respective phytotrons – temperature and humidity will not be significantly affected.
Of course, we will also take care of your plants. But, please make sure that all older plants are tied up and/or packed in bags.
LEDs for the MFPL phytotrons will be delivered in January 2018.
For the specs of the LED please refer to the attachment and the e-mail below.
Briefly, the spectrum is fixed (see attachment) but the intensity adjustable – for the beginning we will set the same intensity which was set in the old setup (2, 4 or 6 tubes).
“We are fully aware that any changes of environmental conditions might influence your experiments, phenotypes etc. and cause issues with repeatability/reproducibility of results.
Still, the desired plan foresees to replace all tubes in one go during the first two weeks of January 2018.
In case of ongoing, highly sensitive experiments and experiment repetitions falling into this timeframe or any other concerns please get in touch with me asap!”
I am happy to discuss the upgrade with you and your group in person and provide you more details on the product and upgrade process.
In case of any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me!
Best regards,
Jakub and Borries

Subject: Upcoming LED light upgrade of ALL phytotrons
Dear group leaders,
Unfortunately, I was not able to present the planned LED upgrade during the last GMI GL meeting.
However, we have finalized the LED product development and are very satisfied with the outcome!
It is planned, to replace the present fluorescent tube installations in ALL phytotrons (GMI -1 and MFPL 8) by a novel custom designed LED solution provided by the German company RHENAC GreenTec AG.
A high-tech LED light solution by RHENAC (variable spectrum) was already installed in chamber #1 (phenotyping) and #2 (Marchantia) last year and is performing very well.
Briefly, the final product design will facilitate i.a. the following:
* Plug & play design
* a fixed and extensively tested light spectrum which is designed to be as close as possible to full sunlight (spectrum see attachment)
* highly homogenous spatial distribution of light intensity and spectrum (minimized edge effects)
* up to max. ~320 µmol m-2 s-1 (limit of passive cooling setups)
* 8 fixed light intensity steps (á ~40 µmol m-2 s-1 ) plus additional linear adjustments in between
The upgrade is planned for the first two weeks of January 2018.
We are fully aware that any changes of environmental conditions might influence your experiments, phenotypes etc. and cause issues with repeatability/reproducibility of results.
Still, the desired plan foresees to replace all tubes in one go during the first two weeks of January 2018.
In case of ongoing, highly sensitive experiments and experiment repetitions falling into this timeframe or any other concerns please get in touch with me asap.
I am happy to discuss the upgrade with you and your group in person and provide you more details on the product and upgrade process.
Best regards,
Jakub & Borries

Dear all,
Since we have upgraded the GMI phytotrons with state-of-the-art LED lights, there are plenty of old light panels available.
In case you are interested in taking some (preferentially all of them :) please drop me a short message asap – by Thursday latest.
Alu case, 1580x600x75 mm, 6 fluorescent tubes – you know them the best.
Sorry for the spam.
Best, Jakub
