[VBC-SCIENCE] On the straight and narrow path -- towards a Linear Regression course :-)

Dear Colleagues, - Science is about understanding connections between phenomena: "Fat-rich diet --> heart attack more likely". - If your observations are noisy, then you need statistical models to describe those connections and to predict likely outcomes. - The simplest connection / model is a straight line. Hence: linear regression. - More complex statistical models, including neural networks and other nonlinear techniques, are based on linear regression. No matter what fancy "machine learning" you use to analyse your data, linear regression often lurks in the background. Learn it with me -- you won't regret it :-) TOPICS - How to fit straight lines? Single, weighted and multivariable linear regression. - How to model noise in both variables? Orthogonal regression, Principal Components Analysis. - How to simplify the models? LASSO, Ridge, Elastic Net regressions. - What to do with correlated independent variables? Principal component regression, orthogonal polynomial regression. Non-VBC colleagues may attend online if needed. PREREQUISITES: Basic statistics knowledge.
