[VBC-SCIENCE] Bash shell scripting course announcement

by Aszodi,Andras

Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce my "Bash shell scripting course". I will teach you how to write Bash scripts to automate common tasks in a UNIX/Linux environment. This course is especially recommended to those colleagues who (plan to) use the CBE cluster, but note that CLUSTER-SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES WILL NOT BE COVERED. For details please check out https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/bash.php . TOPICS: - How to work with data? Variables, arrays, shell arithmetics. - When to do what? Logical decisions ("if" statement). Repeat if necessary: iteration loops. - Code organisation with Bash functions. - Know where your data are: file path manipulations. - Make user-friendly scripts: command-line argument processing, simple text-based menus. DATE: Monday 28th April. TIME: From 09:00 to 13:00 as usual. ATTENDANCE: Physical only because I cannot correct typos remotely :-). Location: IMP E-016 seminar room. PREREQUISITES: - Some minimal familiarity with the UNIX command line. - Good typing skills. You will develop several scripts during the course so let's keep the number of typos to a minimum :-) - Programming knowledge is NOT required, I will explain everything. COST: Free of charge. HOW TO REGISTER: Check your calendar and discuss with your PI. Then click on the appropriate [Register] button at the schedule page: https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/schedule.php#curcrs and fill out the little form. Please keep in mind that registration involves a commitment to attend! Also read the general information guidelines at https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/practical_information.php . [VBC-SCIENCE] ANOVA course announcement

by Aszodi,Andras

Dear Colleagues, Have you ever collected data that look like this? [cid:clip_image001.jpeg] (source: Elizalde et al, Front. Microbiol., Volume 12 - 2021 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2021.758613) If you haven't, it's just a matter of time and you definitely will :-) This is why I am offering my "ANOVA with R" course which will teach you how to analyse such datasets (i.e. compare the means of more than two groups of observations). TOPICS (see ANOVA course<https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/ranova.php> for details): * The intuition behind ANOVA: Comparing the means of several samples by analyzing variances. * Technical details: prerequisites, omnibus F-test, post hoc tests. * Getting the sample size right: Power calculations. * The relationship between ANOVA and linear regression [optional]. * Combination of effects: two-way ANOVA. * "Are these regression lines different?" ANCOVA [if we have time]. DATE/TIME: Thursday the 17th April, 09:00 - 13:00. LOCATION: "Live" at the IMP seminar room E-016 by default. Online participation via Zoom is available only as a fallback option. PREREQUISITES: Familiarity with R and basic statistics knowledge. If you attended my Think Statistics with R<https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/rstat.php> course and perhaps the Linear Regression course<https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/rlinreg.php>, then you'll be just fine. COST: Free of charge. HOW TO REGISTER: First of all: If you register and then don't attend, then you take away a place from a colleague. Please plan ahead responsibly. 1) Check your calendar! 2) Ask your PI. 3) Go to the Training schedule<https://training.vbcf.ac.at/training/schedule.php> page, click on the "Register" button for the ANOVA course and fill out the little form. You will get an automatic acknowledgement by email, and an official confirmation from me later this week.
