Dear colleagues and friends, The EU projects CAPITALIZE (coord. Jeremy Harbinson, Uni Wageningen) and ADAPT (coord. Markus Teige, Uni Vienna), have organized the online workshop: "How to employ phenotyping of photosynthesis-related parameters to measure stress-tolerance in crops" This training workshop is particularly relevant for applied projects as it will be specifically tailored to learn how newest phenotyping technology measuring photosynthetic parameters can be used to get molecular insights into mechanisms of stress acclimation - in fields trails as well as in the glasshouse. It is intended rather for users with background in plant breeding, molecular biology and general physiology and not for specialists in photosynthesis research. Therefore it should be ideal for the postdocs and PhD students working in our projects. It should serve as one first step in bringing together the researchers from different fields working on improving plant performance towards improved stress resilience. It will take place in the afternoon of June 29 and is now updated with the programme and further information on the speakers. APPN/GMI Seminar - High-throughput, multi-sensor plant phenotyping (VBCF PHENOPlant project)

As you might have heard, we are very close to the end of the FFG PHENOPlant project, expecting the commissioning of the infrastructure in the upcoming weeks. Right on time with the re-opening steps in Austria, I would like to invite you to a seminar on high-throughput plant phenotyping by Dr. Klára Panzarová (PSI Research Center) which will take place this Friday, 28th May 2021, 11:30am via Zoom. Klara will talk about the PHENOPlant infrastructure with focus on the incorporated high-tech sensors and the resulting potential biological applications for basic and applied plant research. In particular, following sensors will be presented and discussed: PAM Chlorophyll Fluorescence imaging, LWIR thermal imaging, RGB imaging, 3D imaging (scan) and hyperspectral imaging (VNIR & SWIR). Research in quantitative remote sensing starts at the organ scale moving to the entire plant, population, field, or biotope, up to data obtained from entire continents to explore global phenomena. The use of digital information has been abundantly exploited for more efficient cultivation of large areas and has become part of agricultural practices worldwide for irrigation and fertilization based on management zones. In addition, breeders are using high-throughput phenotyping in selection experiments for biotic and abiotic stresses as well as yield quantity and quality. Ecologists are using remotely sensed information to assess carbon footprint. Analyzing high-quality remote sensing observations is also challenging in view of upcoming hyperspectral spaceborne missions and their associated large data streams. Therefore, the development and adaptation of fast, effective, accurate, and generic retrieval algorithms for biophysical and biochemical traits is required. Methods should be provided on appropriate platforms and evaluated by plant physiologists, agronomists, and ecologists. This Special Issue strongly encourages contributions aimed at estimating the morpho-physiological and biochemical plant traits (e.g., plant height, LAI, biomass, nutrient contents, water status, pigment concentration, photosynthetic activity, disease resistance, yield prediction, pollutants detection) from Earth Observation data in agricultural and ecological contexts to support food security and sustainability. This Special Issue aims to cover a vast range of spatial resolutions (from continent to sub-leaf or root) and spectral resolutions (RGB, multi- and hyperspectral imagery, as well as point data). Besides diverse empirical and physically based retrieval approaches, “hybrid approaches” combining the generic properties of radiative transfer models with the flexibility and efficiency of nonlinear nonparametric methods (machine learning) are welcome. Moreover, time-series analysis related to plant traits assessment can be exploited. This Special Issue is expected to demonstrate recent progress and to discuss future perspectives in plant traits sensing. INVITATION: 2nd D-ROOT MEETING https://droot.info/ Date: 4th March 2020. Venue: University of Vienna, Althanstrasse 14, 1090 Vienna, UZA II, Seminar Room 2D404 Plant performance is strongly affected by environmental conditions. Subsequently, results of controlled conditions of the lab – “Pampered inside, pestered outside” – are often not suitable to translate back to field conditions. Besides phenotypically differences between lab- and field-grown plants, shoot and root environment must be considered. The D-root meeting was set up to bring scientist together to study the root system architecture (RSA) including the morphological as well as the molecular mechanisms of roots grown under more natural light conditions. First mentioned in 2015, the community working with the D-root device is strongly growing comprising researchers with basic and applied plant background working with Arabidopsis thaliana or cereals. This meeting brings scientist together to present, share and discuss new results and applications concerning experiments with dark-grown roots. Best wishes, Jakub.
